Assignments allow teachers to set course content for an entire class or selected students.
Students complete assignments through the normal Knowness learning experience, while teachers can monitor completion, progress, time spent, scores, and individual responses.
1. What Can Be Assigned
Teachers can assign content from the courses linked to their classes.
An assignment can include:
- Sections: A larger part of the course containing modules and lessons.
- Modules: A group of related lessons.
- Lessons: A complete lesson.
- Topics: A specific part of a lesson.
- Multiple items: A combination of different course items within the same assignment.
Selecting a larger course item automatically includes the relevant content within it. For example, assigning a module includes its published lessons, while assigning a topic includes the flashcards and exercises contained within that topic.
2. Who Can Receive Assignments
Teachers can assign work to:
- An entire class: All eligible students in the selected class.
- Selected students: Specific students chosen from the class.
Teachers and authorised supporting staff can create assignments for classes they have access to. Heads of department can also access assignments for enabled classes within their subject.
3. What Students Receive
When an assignment is created, it appears in the student's Assignments area and can also appear on their Home dashboard. If the assignment has a due date, it also appears on the student's calendar.
An assignment can include:
- Title
- Teacher instructions
- Subject and class
- Assigned course content
- Due date, if one has been set
- Current status
Students can select the assigned content to open the relevant section, module, lesson, or topic. See 5.2 Viewing Your Assignments for more information.
4. Completing an Assignment
There is no separate Submit Assignment button. Knowness automatically monitors the student's normal learning activity and marks an assignment as complete once all required content has been completed.
For flashcards and exercises, a card counts towards assignment completion once it has been attempted. The answer does not need to be correct for the card to count as completed. Assignment completion and answer correctness are measured separately.
This means a student can complete the required work while the teacher can still see which responses were correct or incorrect. See 5.3 Completing an Assignment for more information.
5. Existing Progress
Work completed before an assignment was created still counts.
For example, if a student has already completed all the required work in a lesson and that lesson is later assigned, Knowness recognises the existing progress.
Assignments therefore measure whether the required content has been completed rather than requiring students to repeat work they have already done.
6. Assignment Status
For students, an assignment can appear as:
- To do: Some required work still needs to be completed.
- Completed: All required content has been completed.
- Overdue: The due date has passed and the assignment is still incomplete.
An overdue assignment can still be completed.
If an assignment has no due date, it remains available until it is completed or removed.
7. Teacher Progress Tracking
Teachers can open an assignment to monitor how students are progressing.
Depending on the assigned content, teachers can view information including:
- Completion status
- Progress through the assigned content
- Time spent
- Assignment score
- Individual flashcard and exercise responses
- Whether responses were correct, incorrect, or skipped
The assignment score is based on the proportion of required cards whose latest recorded answer is correct. Unattempted required cards remain part of the total.
Teachers can therefore distinguish between simply completing the assigned work and how well the student performed. See 5.5 Viewing Assignment Progress for more information.
8. Assignment Notifications
Students receive a notification when new work is assigned to them. Teachers can also receive a notification when a student completes an assignment.
Email notifications may also be sent depending on the user's notification settings.
For more information on creating assignments, selecting students, choosing course content, and setting deadlines, see 5.4 Creating an Assignment.
