Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
Knowness is a learning platform, built on over 50 years of learning science, that brings structured courses, active practice, personalised revision, assignments, progress tracking, and study tools together in one place.
Knowness can be used by students, teachers, parents, and schools. The features available to you depend on your account and the subjects or classes you have access to.
Students can get started by creating a Knowness account or signing in using their school-provided account. Once signed in, they can access their available subjects, explore course content, and begin learning by completing lessons, Flashcards, and Exercises. As they progress, Knowness tracks their completion and proficiency and schedules revision to help strengthen long-term memory.
Teachers can get started by signing in to their school-provided Knowness account. Once signed in, they can access their school's classes and explore the available course content. Teachers can monitor student progress, create assignments, and use class analytics to identify areas where students may need additional support.
Learning & Progress
Learning involves studying new material for the first time, including reading explanations, completing activities, and attempting Flashcards and Exercises. Revision focuses on reviewing previously learned material to strengthen long-term memory and prevent forgetting. Knowness uses spaced practice to schedule revision, with more difficult material reviewed sooner and more securely learned material reviewed at longer intervals.
Proficiency estimates how securely a student knows a Flashcard or Exercise. It is based on review history and the likelihood of recalling material again, rather than only whether the most recent answer was correct.
Cards are grouped as Not Attempted, Low, Medium, High and Max proficiency. Higher bands indicate that Knowness estimates the material can be recalled more reliably. Class proficiency distributions show how students’ cards are spread across these levels.
Memory naturally becomes less secure over time. Proficiency can decrease when material has not been reviewed recently and can increase again after successful revision.
Course proficiency combines the proficiency of cards attempted across a course. Unattempted cards are shown separately as Not Attempted.
Completion records that a student has finished the required lesson content. Proficiency estimates how securely the student can still recall it. A completed lesson can therefore have low or decreasing proficiency.
Existing completion is retained, but Knowness marks the topic as containing new cards so the learner knows there is additional material to attempt.
After a student has reviewed at least 10 eligible cards, Knowness estimates the likelihood of recalling the reviewed material and compares that score with the available grade boundaries for the subject and selected tier. It is a learning indicator, not a formal teacher prediction, guaranteed examination result or grade awarded by a teacher.
The student may need to review more cards first. An estimated grade also requires eligible revision cards and suitable grade-boundary data. Some subjects, including University Tasters, do not use estimated grades.
A card contributes to the estimated grade only after it has been reviewed. To obtain a more representative estimate, students should revise across the course rather than repeatedly reviewing a small selection.
The estimate reflects current recall. It can increase after successful reviews or decrease as previously learned material becomes less secure. Regular revision keeps it more representative.
Knowness uses a spaced-practice algorithm to schedule each Flashcard and Exercise. Material a student finds difficult is normally reviewed sooner, while secure material is revisited at longer intervals.
A card marked Due Today is scheduled for review today. It becomes overdue the following day if it remains unreviewed. An overdue card was scheduled before today and has not yet been reviewed.
Yes. Students can practise available cards voluntarily before their scheduled review date. At-risk cards may also be available because their proficiency is approaching a lower level.
Yes. The Deck Manager allows you to create revision decks using Flashcards and Exercises from different lessons and courses. Visit the Decks page to create revision decks.
Lesson completion and long-term recall are different. Revision helps students retain completed material instead of forgetting it over time.
Working through a manageable number of cards regularly is generally more useful than attempting everything at once. Consistent shorter sessions are preferable to infrequent cramming.
Work through the lesson and complete its required activities. Where a lesson contains Flashcards, Exercises or embedded interactions, you may need to finish those before the lesson can be completed.
Study Mode takes you through a selected lesson, module or other course area in order, helping you complete its learning content and practice activities as one focused session.
Yes. Your saved progress and learning time remain available when you return.
Learning time records active time in lessons. The timer pauses when the lesson is no longer visible, helping prevent inactive time in another browser tab from being counted.
Subjects can be added through enabled class links or through a student’s own subject choices.
Some subjects do not use every feature. For example, proficiency is hidden when a course has no Flashcards or Exercises, and embedded-interaction progress is hidden when none are available.
Assignments
Your assignments appear on the Assignments page and in the My School area of your dashboard.
Depending on the course structure, teachers can assign sections, modules, lessons, topics or selected learning and practice content. Where recipient selection is available, work can be assigned to individual students instead of the entire class.
Knowness expands the assigned content into its required learning and practice items. Assignment progress updates automatically as students complete those items.
An assignment becomes overdue after its due date if the student has not completed all required items. It remains available to complete unless the teacher removes it.
Assignments use the latest available content. When an existing lesson, topic or card is mapped to its updated version, relevant student answers, progress, review history and proficiency are preserved.
Open an enabled class or an eligible course area and select Create Assignment. Choose the content, students and due date before publishing it.
This can happen if its content is unpublished, unavailable or no longer contains eligible activities. Reload the assignment first and report the issue if the content should still be available.
Yes, where the Delete action is available. Deleting it removes the assignment from the affected students, so check the assignment details before proceeding.
No. The parent progress view currently focuses on overall learning, due revision, proficiency and subject progress. Assignment controls remain within the student and teacher experiences.
Schools & Classes
The student drawer includes activity, learning time, assignments, streak information, proficiency and course progress down to sections, modules and lessons.
Your enabled classes appear on the Home and Classes pages. They are also grouped by academic year in the app sidebar, allowing you to return to classes from previous years.
The class may not have been enabled yet, may belong to a different academic year, or may not be associated with your school membership. Visit the Classes page to check its status or request enablement.
Find the class on the Classes page and select the enablement option. The Knowness team will receive a notification and can review the request.
Previous classes are retained as archived classes and remain grouped under their original academic year. This preserves access to historical students, assignments and class information.
The class may not be enabled, its school membership data may still be updating, or you may not have the necessary teaching or Head of Subject access. Try reloading first, then report the issue if the class remains empty.
You can access students in enabled classes you teach. Heads of Subject can also access students in enabled classes associated with their assigned subject.
A Head of Subject can oversee all enabled classes associated with their assigned subject, including classes taught by other staff members. They can view student progress, create assignments and see class enablement requests for that subject. Head of Subject access can be assigned without teaching an enabled class and can cover more than one subject.
It provides an overview of student activity, learning time and proficiency so teachers can identify participation patterns and areas that may need support.
Yes. Select a student anywhere a teacher-facing student table appears to open their detailed progress drawer.
Reports summarise class and student progress, including learning activity, lessons completed, proficiency and other available course metrics.
For school-managed accounts, names and school information are supplied through the school's MIS and may not be editable from personal settings.
XP, Gems & Streaks
XP is earned through eligible learning, revision and platform activities. It contributes to the student’s level and leaderboard position.
Gems are rewards students can spend on available items and features, including streak freezes, streak repair and eligible shop items.
A streak records consecutive days on which a student completes eligible learning or revision activity.
A streak freeze can protect a student’s streak after a missed eligible learning day, if a freeze is available.
An eligible student may repair a recently broken streak within 72 hours for 80 gems. Streak repair can be used at most once every 14 days.
The previous streak is restored, but the current day is not automatically counted as active. The student must complete eligible learning activity that day to continue the streak into the following day.
Eligible school students can appear on leaderboards for their classes or the whole school, including students who have not earned XP during the selected period. Teachers can also view weekly, monthly and all-time school leaderboards.
Knowness may award 5 gems when a genuine reported mistake or bug is resolved.
Accounts & Features
The Calendar shows upcoming assignments and scheduled Flashcard and Exercise reviews, including anything that has become overdue.
The Knowness AI Tutor provides learning support within the platform. Students and teachers with an active school membership can use it without limits.
The Notebook lets you create, organise and revisit notes while studying across Knowness.
Yes. In Settings, you can choose your avatar colour, eyes and mouth.
Open Settings and choose Notifications to control eligible web, email and mobile-app notifications individually.
Open Settings and find the Family section. Enter the email address the student uses for Knowness and select Request Link. The student receives a notification and can approve or decline the request in Settings under Family. The request remains pending until a decision is made. Parents can request links to multiple students, and multiple parents can link to the same student, provided the student separately approves each request.
A parent cannot view a student’s progress until the student has approved the request. This keeps access permissioned and protects the student’s account.
Check that you entered the exact email address used for their Knowness account. For privacy, Knowness does not confirm whether an account exists when a request cannot be matched.
Yes. Either the parent or the student can remove an active link from Settings. The parent then loses access to that student’s progress.
Parent access provides a separate, read-only progress view. It does not allow parents to log in as the student, access the student’s password or personal learning workspace, complete lessons, change the student’s profile or settings, spend their gems, or create or manage assignments. Linking a parent does not change the student’s subjects, plan, school, classes or teachers.
Approved students appear in the Linked Students section of your Home dashboard. Select a student to open their detailed progress view.
The dashboard provides an overview of linked students, including XP, gems, streaks, active subjects and revision requiring attention. Selecting a student opens a detailed progress view showing subjects, lesson completion, revision due, proficiency, estimated grades, recent activity and areas that may need attention.
The request may still be pending, may have been declined, or the family link may have been removed. Check its status in Settings.
Progress is limited to the student and authorised users, such as approved parents, relevant teachers and permitted school staff.
Troubleshooting
Use Report a Mistake from the relevant lesson or card. For a Flashcard or Exercise, card-specific reporting becomes available after an answer is submitted so the report can include the relevant card details.
Use Report a Bug from the profile menu. Include what happened, where it occurred and, where possible, steps to reproduce it. For an issue with a linked student view, specify which view was affected.
Open Help Centre and select Mistakes or Bugs under Support, as applicable. Each report displays its current status and any response from the Knowness team.
If the guides, FAQs or Help Centre do not resolve the question, email [email protected].
Reload the page first to allow recent activity to appear. If the information still appears incorrect, report the issue through the Help Centre.
