The digestive system is the body system that is responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. It includes the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

The mouth is the organ that is responsible for mechanically breaking down food by chewing and grinding.

The pharynx is a tube-like structure that connects the mouth to the esophagus.

The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach.

The stomach is a muscular organ that is responsible for mechanically and chemically breaking down food by mixing it with stomach acid and enzymes.

The small intestine is a long, narrow tube that is responsible for absorbing nutrients from the digested food.

The large intestine is a wider tube that is responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes from the indigestible parts of the food and forming feces (waste).

The anus is the opening through which feces are eliminated from the body.
