5.2 Spectroscopic Techniques
The absorbance and emission of electromagnetic waves is the basis for a whole range of spectroscopic techniques. In this lesson we will introduce a couple of these techniques to you which you will likely encounter during your degree.
Spectroscopy and the Electromagnetic Spectrum
The range of different spectroscopic techniques chemists use are divided by the region of the electromagnetic spectrum they irradiate the sample with. This is because different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum excite different features in atoms and molecules. Remember the lower the wavelength the more energy the wave has. That is why X-rays and gamma rays are dangerous to humans while we are exposed to radio waves all day long.
