If you think Chemistry might be for you then consider what fundamental skills you should focus on how to best prepare yourself for your degree. This lesson aims to guide you through potential A-Level choices, so you can better prepare yourself for a degree in Chemistry alongside the extracurricular activities that may be beneficial.

Essential A-Level/IB Subjects

Most universities will require specific A-level subjects to enable you to pursue a Chemistry degree. As the exact requirements can vary it is worth checking the universities website if you already have one in mind. Generally though, all universities will require A-Level Chemistry to prove a good understanding of the subject.

Most courses will also require at least one of either biology, physics or mathematics. Some programs may require you to take more than one of those subjects in addition to your Chemistry A-Level. It is also worth noting that even when three science A-Levels (including Chemistry or mathematics) is not required, their presence will be regarded favourably by the universities considering your application.

For those undertaking the international baccalaureate (IB), most universities will require an overall score of 32-36 points with specific requirements for certain subjects. Higher Level (HL) courses in Chemistry and at least one other science with good grades (5,6 or 7) are seen as essential to demonstrate a good scientific foundation for your Chemistry degree. Exact requirements can vary, so it is worth checking the university’s website if you already have one in mind.
