Chemistry – University Taster
Analytical Chemistry is the branch of Chemistry focused on identifying and quantifying the components of matter. By using advanced techniques to study the composition and structure of substances, Analytical Chemistry provides the tools to solve problems in fields ranging from environmental monitoring to drug development and forensic science. Analytical Chemistry is invaluable to all three branches of Chemistry you have previously encountered (Physical, Organic, and Inorganic).
In this module, you will explore how atomic and molecular properties are studied through spectroscopyThe study of how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation. Depending on what radiation is used there are different types of spectroscopy UV, NMR, IR. Note mass spectroscopy does not actually utilise electromagnetic radiation but is still referred to as spectroscopy., a key area of Analytical Chemistry. You’ll learn about atomic spectra and how they provide insights into elemental composition. We’ll dive into UV-Vis spectroscopy for analysing electronic transitions, vibrational spectroscopy for studying molecular vibrations, and NMR for understanding the environments of atoms in molecules.
Additionally, you’ll explore mass spectrometry, a technique used to determine molecular weights and structures. By mastering these techniques, chemists decipher molecular details which lead to innovations that in turn ensure the quality of products and processes.
