5.7.1 Momentum is a Property of Moving Objects HT
In this lesson, we will explore the concept of momentum, understand its significance, and examine how mass and velocity affect an object's momentum.
Momentum
Momentum describes the motion and impact of moving objects. It is defined as the product of an object's mass and velocity. The equation for momentum is given as:
p = m * v
Variables:
- p = Momentum in kilograms metre per second, kg m/s
- m = Mass in kilograms, kg
- v = Velocity in metres per second, m/s
Objects with greater mass possess more momentum for a given velocity. Objects with higher velocities have more momentum for a given mass.
Conclusion
Momentum is a fundamental property of moving objects that is defined as the product of mass and velocity. It quantifies the "motion" an object possesses and plays a vital role in understanding the impact and interaction of objects.
