3. Archaeological Fieldwork
This module will outline the methods and processes used to conduct archaeological fieldwork, walking you through each step from beginning to end. Fieldwork is typically conducted by commercial or research teams, and the timeline and funding can vary wildly between projects. The process almost always begins with the desk based assessment of a given area, using the written records of historical land use, previous archaeological investigation, and any finds that have emerged over the years. Field survey is also employed, investigating a landscape to ascertain more about a region. Without this research and survey archaeologists would effectively be going in blind and struggle to effectively use our time and resources. Once the surveys are conducted we can target the most archaeologically rich areas of a site, and then the excavation begins. This module will walk through each step, how it works and the methods deployed at each stage for the best results.
