2.2.1 Question 1: 4 Marks
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to answer GCSE English Language Paper 2, Question 1. We’ll focus on identifying four true statements from Source A, practising how to carefully match details from the text to the options and secure these straightforward 4 marks.
Paper 2: Question 1
Question 1 is a quick comprehension check. You will be asked to read a specified portion of Source A (usually the beginning) and identify four true statements from a list of options. This tests your ability to pick out explicit information from the text (Assessment Objective AO1: identify and interpret information). It’s designed to be straightforward and help you settle into the exam. The question format typically says: “Read again the first part of Source A from lines X to Y. Choose four statements below which are TRUE.” There may be seven or eight statements provided, and you must shade/select only four that are correct based on the text.

- Worth 4 marks; assesses AO1 – identifying and interpreting explicit information.
- Based on specific lines from the start of Source A; only use information from those lines.
- Typical wording: “Read again the first part of Source A from lines X–Y. Choose four statements below which are TRUE.”
- Task: Read the specified lines carefully, compare each statement to the text, and select exactly four that match.
Approaching Question 1
- Eliminate definitely false statements to narrow choices.
- If a statement is partially true or not mentioned, do not select it.
- Be literal – even small differences in detail make a statement false.
- Time: about 5 minutes; a warm-up question.
- Avoid: reading outside the specified lines, assuming unstated information, misreading details, missing negatives (e.g., “not,” “never”), or selecting more/less than four.
