In this lesson, we will learn about the exclamation mark(!) Ends sentences showing strong emotion, urgency, or command; use sparingly in formal writing., a punctuation mark used to show strong emotion, surprise, emphasis, or command. It helps convey feelings and tone in writing that might otherwise be lost. We will explore how exclamation marks are used, what they signal to the reader, and how to avoid overusing them.
Exclamation Mark
This is what an exclamation mark looks like:
\(\text{!}\)
An exclamation mark is used at the end of a sentence to show strong emotion, urgency, surprise, or volume. For example, it can show excitement (“That’s amazing!”), anger (“Go away!”), or shock (“What a mess!”). Although effective, exclamation marks should be used sparingly, especially in formal writing, where they can come across as overly dramatic or unprofessional if misused.
Example
Examples include:
- Watch out!
- That’s incredible!
- Get out of the way!
Each of these sentences uses an exclamation mark to show urgency or strong feeling.
Common Mistake
Students often use too many exclamation marks in formal or academic writing, where they are not needed. For example:
The character feels betrayed! This shows the tension in the story!
This would be better written as:
The character feels betrayed. This shows the tension in the story.
Exclamation marks are usually placed:
- After an exclamatory sentence (e.g. What a wonderful day!)
- After a command for emphasis (e.g. Stop that!)
After an interjection or single-word exclamation (e.g. Wow!)
