In this lesson, we will explore the question mark, a punctuation mark used at the end of a sentence to indicate a direct question. Question marks help the reader understand that the sentence is asking something and invites a response. Using question marks correctly makes your writing clear and helps you communicate curiosity, inquiry, or doubt. We will learn how to use question marks properly and see examples of different types of questions.

Question Mark

This is what a question mark looks like:

\(\text{?}\)

A question mark is used to indicate a direct question. But is that the only way a question mark can be used? In the English language, it practically is. Every time you ask a question, you must end the clause with a question mark. This clearly signifies that what you are writing is a question.

Sometimes, in dialogue within a book, you may see a question mark being used to show that someone is confused, or that they are asking a question without requiring an answer, but instead stating a fact. This is called a rhetorical question. It is a linguistic device used to communicate a thought or feeling.

A question mark is used only at the end of a sentence that asks a direct question. For example:

  • What time is it?
  • Have you seen my book?

It should not be used with statements, commands, or indirect questions. Question marks are essential in both spoken and written English to clarify when someone is seeking information.
