1.4.2 Language Analysis
In this lesson, we will explore language analysisExplaining how specific word choices create meaning and effect., which includes identifying word classes, providing definitions, connotations, identifying devices, and eventually deriving meaning. Devices are tools writers use to make their writing more interesting, expressive, and effective. Understanding language devices will help you analyse texts better and improve your own writing skills.
Language Devices
In your exams, to reach the highest marks on some questions (namely: Paper 1: Question 2, and Paper 2: Question 3) you must identify word classes, definitions, connotations, language devices and therefore derive meaning from this analysis. This is called analysing the language in a quote, or finding meaning. It is also called exploding a quote.
Language devices include techniques like similes, metaphors, alliterationRepetition of the same consonant sound at the starts of nearby words., personificationGiving human qualities to non-human things., and many more. These devices help to create vivid images, emphasise ideas, and engage the reader’s emotions.
