2.1.1 Question 1: 4 Marks
In this lesson, you’ll be introduced to GCSE English Language Paper 1, Question 1, focusing on retrieval skillsThe ability to locate and extract information.. We’ll break down the updated multiple-choice formatQuestion style with options where only one is correct., walk through an example, and practice identifying information directly from the text to secure full marks.
Paper 1: Question 1
Welcome to GCSE English Language Paper 1, Question 1, where we focus on retrieval skills (Assessment Objective 1, meaning retrieval i.e. getting things from the text). This first question is designed to ease you into the exam — it’s meant to be straightforward and accessible. In fact, examiners assume most students can score full marks here, as Q1 aims to “get you four marks and set you on your way to the rest of the paper”.
Starting in 2026, however, Question 1 has an updated format: instead of an open-ended “list four things” task, it is now a multiple-choice retrieval question. Don’t worry – the skills tested remain the same. They have made it slightly easier by giving you the answers!

- Q1 tests AO1 retrieval (identify explicit facts and very simple implicit ideas) from specified lines.
- From 2026, Q1 is multiple choice: four items, three options each.
- Still worth 4 marks: one mark per correct tick; no analysis or extended writing needed.
- Designed to be straightforward “easy marks” if you read carefully.
Approaching Question 1
- You’ll be directed to a line rangeSpecific section of the text to focus on for a question. (often the opening); answer all four items using only those lines.
- For each item, select one option (A–C) that matches the text; each correct choice = 1 mark (4 total).
- Treat the options as “given answers”: verify each against the wording of the lines.
- Focus on explicit details and simple, safe inferences; avoid overthinking.
Sample Question 1
- Correct options come straight from the specified lines; wrong ones add or twist details not supported.
Key Points
- Stick strictly to the specified line range; ignore blurbs and knowledge from outside those lines.
- Read carefully and watch keywords; careless rushing throws away easy marks.
