English Language
In this lesson, we will explore the full stop(.) Marks the end of a complete sentence., one of the most important punctuation marks in English. We will look at how to use full stops properly and why they are important for effective communication.
Full Stop
This is what a full stop looks like:
\(\text{.}\)
A full stop is used to show the end of a sentence, like this. Full stops are important to end a sentence as they help readers understand where one idea finishes and another begins. Using full stops correctly makes writing clearer and easier to read. It is a universal sign that is important to the structure of not only the English language, but also most European languages in the world, such as Spanish, French and Italian.
Full stops are not the only way to end a sentence or clause though. As detailed in the clause and sentence modules, you could use an exclamation mark(!) Ends sentences showing strong emotion, urgency, or command; use sparingly in formal writing., question mark(?) Ends a direct question (including rhetorical questions). or other marks to end your sentence, depending on the purpose of the writing.
Example
I took the dog for a walk. We stopped by the park. Then we came home.
Each full stop marks the end of a complete thought. It helps divide separate ideas and creates a clear, logical flow.
Common Mistake
I love playing football I also enjoy swimming I hate running though
This sentence has no full stops (or other punctuation) and is therefore called a run-on sentenceTwo or more independent clauses joined with no proper punctuation or conjunction.. It becomes difficult to follow. The corrected version would be:
I love playing football. I also enjoy swimming. I hate running though.
