Quantum Mechanics and the Electronic Structure of Atoms
This lesson will delve into the complex world of quantum mechanicsThe theory used to describe the behaviour of very small particles (atomic and subatomic level). Unlike classical physics which is deterministic, quantum mechanics is a probabilistic theory. and its application to the electronic structureThe organisation and order of information in a text. of atoms. We will explore the wave-particle duality of matter and the Schrödinger equation, and how they relate to the quantum numbers and electron configurations of atoms. We will also introduce the Aufbau principle and the Pauli exclusion principle, which are key concepts in understanding the organization of electrons in atoms.
