Balancing Redox Reactions
To balance a redox reaction, one must first break the reaction into its half-reactions, as described above. The half-reactions are then balanced separately, and they are combined to give the balanced redox reaction.
To combine the half-reactions, one must ensure that the number of electrons in the oxidation half-reaction is equal to the number of electrons in the reduction half-reaction. This can be done by multiplying one or both of the half-reactions by an appropriate factor.
Once the half-reactions are balanced and combined, the final redox reaction must be checked to ensure that it is balanced. This can be done by counting the number of atoms and the charge on both sides of the reaction. If the number of atoms and the charge are balanced, then the redox reaction is balanced.
