Atonement

Atonement refers to the act of reconciliation and making amends for sin. In Christianity, the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross is central to salvation. His death is understood as a sacrifice that appeases God's justice and reconciles humanity with God.

The idea of atonement emphasises that Jesus' death provides the means by which believers can be forgiven and reconciled with God. It demonstrates God's love and mercy, as well as His justice and holiness.

Substitutionary Atonement

Substitutionary atonement is a specific understanding of Jesus' sacrificial death. According to this view, Jesus took the place of sinners, bearing the penalty for their sins on the cross. He became the substitute for humanity, suffering the punishment they deserved.

This view is based on passages such as Isaiah 53:5-6, which prophesies about the suffering servant who bears the sins of many. Christians believe that through faith in Christ, they are forgiven and justified before God because Jesus bore their sins and provided the way for reconciliation with God.

Redemption and Justification

Through Jesus' atoning sacrifice, Christians believe that they are redeemed from sin and its consequences. Redemption involves being bought back from bondage to sin through Christ's payment on the cross.

Romans 3:24-25 explains this concept: "and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood."

Justification is another essential concept related to salvation. It refers to the act of being declared righteous before God based on the merits of Christ. Christians are justified by faith, not by their own works or efforts, but by accepting Christ's sacrifice on their behalf.
