5.3 Gottlob Frege and Predicate Logic
Gottlob Frege (1848–1925) was a German philosopher and logician who expanded on Aristotle’s syllogisms. He revolutionised the field of LogicThe study of correct reasoning. by introducing a more precise system called predicate logicA type of logic that expanded on syllogisms and enabled more complex reasoning., and this system forms the basis of modern “symbolic” logic (i.e. using symbols).
Why Did Frege Expand on Syllogisms?
Frege’s method enabled more complex reasoning than Aristotle’s syllogisms, and the use of symbols made arguments more precise, clear, and rigorous. His innovations expanded logic beyond Aristotle’s simple categorical reasoning to include more complex relationships.
