Before we begin, it’s important to understand what PhilosophyThe study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, and ethics. is and why somebody might want to study it at degree level, or indeed, at all.
Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, and ethics. The word “Philosophy” comes from the Greek word philosophia, meaning “love of wisdom”. At its core, Philosophy seeks to explore the big questions such as: What is the meaning of life? How do we know what is true? What is the nature of happiness? What is morally right?
Philosophy is divided into branches such as Metaphysics (the study of reality), Epistemology (the study of knowledge), Ethics (the study of right and wrong), and Logic (the study of reasoning). These areas encourage critical thinkingThe ability to effectively analyse and evaluate arguments. and challenge our assumptions, and therefore Philosophy is a tool to better understand ourselves and the world around us.
