1.2 Memory and Storage

In this module, you will learn how computers store data and instructions using primary and secondary storage, and how different types of data are represented in binary. You will begin by exploring primary storage, including RAM and ROM, and learn how virtual memory and cache support the operation and performance of a computer system.

Next, you will examine secondary storage, including optical, magnetic, and solid-state technologies. You will compare their characteristics and consider factors such as capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability, and cost when choosing suitable storage devices and media for different situations.

You will then explore the units used to measure data storage and learn how to convert between them and calculate storage requirements. You will study denary, binary, and hexadecimal number systems, including conversions, binary addition, overflow errors, and binary shifts.

Finally, you will learn how characters, images, and sound are represented digitally. You will explore character sets, pixels, colour depth, resolution, metadata, sampling, sample rate, bit depth, and duration, and calculate the storage required for text, image, and sound data. You will finish by examining lossy and lossless compression and how each reduces file size for different types of data and applications.
