1.1 Requirements to Pursue a Law Degree
A law degree can be very rewarding and offers many options, but it is best to be certain you wish to undertake the degree as it can be difficult for many. It is important to know what is required if you want to be accepted onto a course successfully. This guide outlines the requirements and things which might enable you to stand out as an applicant in the process.
Essential A-Level/IB Subjects
Many UK universities expect those applying to study Law to be academically able and engaged with their studies. Although a Law A-Level may demonstrate commitment to the subjectThe person, place, thing, or idea the clause is about; performs or experiences the verb., it is not essential and can still be beneficial for other courses.
Universities value subjects that demonstrate you’re able to critically analyse a situation, research a topic, and produce strong arguments. Often these are essay-based subjects such as History, Economics, or English Literature. However, after university many lawyers value a range of knowledge and subjects such as Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics which can often prove very helpful in fields such as intellectual property.
Tip
For a Law degree, the precise A-Level subject is often less important than the actual result. If you are torn between two subjects, it is worth considering and choosing the one you are better at to make your application more competitive. Remember, this is only a general rule and you should always consult the university’s course requirements when making your final decisions.
For IB students, universities will often accept an IB Diploma as qualification for entry. Scores will vary but generally a score of 32-36 will be fine, with Higher Level (HL) subjects in History, Literature, or Economics considered valuable.
