What is Mechanics?

Mechanics is concerned with the behaviour of physical bodies when subjected to forces or displacements. It is divided into two main branches:

  • Statical Mechanics: The study of systems in equilibrium (where forces and moments balance each other out).
  • Dynamics: The study of bodies in motion, including the effects of forces that produce acceleration.

In structural Engineering, statics is the most relevant branch, as it focuses on analysing structures that are not in motion, ensuring that they remain stable under applied loads.

Dynamic loading applies in situations such as vehicular load analysis or seismic activity assessment.
