This lesson discusses the importance of choosing the right Civil Engineering specialism for academic success and future career. It highlights the technical content and progression of knowledge in different specialisms like geotechnics, water, and structural Engineering. Understanding these specialisms and researching university offerings can help you select the degree path that aligns with your interests and career goals.

How to Choose the Right Degree

Choosing the right degree is an important step in shaping your academic journey and future career. The table below provides a brief overview of the various modules and specialisms within Civil Engineering. These fields range from geotechnics to water to structural Engineering and all are highly technical in their content.

This approach grants you versatility within Engineering and general knowledge about every discipline which is useful to use in overlap scenarios later in your career. It also grants you the ability to get a taste of each discipline should you change your mind about which specific field you wish to pursue. Understanding the differences between these degrees will allow you to pick the one that best aligns with your goals in this dynamic and diverse field.

Each university will set its own degree requirements in terms of A-Level grades, UCAS points and/or BTECs for you to study a degree of your choice at their institution. Of course, the more prestigious a university is (e.g., a Russell Group University) the higher the grade requirements shall be to be enrolled onto one of their Engineering courses.

Note

Russell Group Universities are a prestigious group of 24 leading research institutions in the UK. Known for their world-class research and academic excellence, they have strong connections with industry and the public sector and receive a large share of the UK's research funding. These universities also produce a significant number of the country’s PhD graduates, making them a top choice for those pursuing advanced academic careers.

Commit yourself to your area of passion by researching degrees offered by different universities. Compare degrees based upon the modules they offer and which modules appeal to you more than others. Before applying make sure to look up a university ranking table for the last 3-5 years to evaluate which locations are most suitable to you. Whatever you decide to pursue at this stage may dictate the outcome of your dream career.
