Solid Waste Management
Solid waste management is the process of collecting, transporting, and disposing of solid waste in an environmentally responsible manner. Environmental Engineers play a critical role in managing solid waste by developing and implementing strategies to minimize the amount of waste generated and to maximize the recycling and reuse of materials.
One of the most common methods of solid waste management is landfilling. This involves the disposal of solid waste in a specially designed and engineered landfill. Landfills are designed to contain and isolate waste from the environment, and to prevent the release of pollutants into the air and water. Landfills are also typically lined with a layer of clay or synthetic materials to prevent the escape of leachate (liquid generated by the decay of waste) and the pollution of the groundwater.
Recycling is another important aspect of solid waste management. This process involves the collection and processing of materials that can be used again. Recycling can include the separation and collection of paper, glass, metal, and plastic, as well as the composting of organic materials such as food scraps and yard waste.
