The study of astronomy is a rapidly advancing field, and the future holds many exciting missions and projects that will contribute to our understanding of the universe. In this chapter, we will discuss some of the major future missions and projects in astronomy, including their objectives, capabilities, and the role of international collaboration.

One of the most eagerly anticipated future missions in astronomy is the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Scheduled for launch in 2021, the JWST is a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). It is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, and it is equipped with a number of advanced instruments and capabilities. The JWST will be able to observe a wide range of wavelengths, from the ultraviolet to the infrared, and it will be able to observe both the early universe and the formation of galaxies, stars, and planetary systems.

Another major future mission is the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). LSST is an 8.4-meter wide-field survey telescope that will scan the sky in visible and infrared light, observing billions of objects, including stars, galaxies, and transient phenomena. LSST will take several hundred panoramic images each night, covering the entire visible southern sky and mapping out the positions and properties of hundreds of millions of galaxies and a billion stars.

International collaboration plays a crucial role in these future missions and projects. The JWST, for example, is a collaboration between NASA, ESA, and CSA, with each agency contributing expertise, resources, and funding. The LSST project is a collaboration between institutions in the United States, Chile, and several other countries, with partners providing funding, expertise, and the use of facilities. These collaborations bring together the best minds and resources from around the world, making it possible to achieve goals that would be impossible for a single country or institution to accomplish alone.
