Water and air pollution are major environmental problems that can have serious impacts on human health and the environment. Environmental engineers work to prevent and control pollution through the use of various technologies and management strategies.

Water pollution control is the process of reducing or eliminating the release of pollutants into bodies of water, such as rivers, lakes, and oceans. One of the most common methods of water pollution control is the treatment of wastewater. This involves removing contaminants from wastewater before it is released into the environment. Treatment processes may include physical, chemical, and biological processes such as screening, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection.

Another method of water pollution control is the use of best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the amount of pollution generated by activities such as agriculture and industrial processes. BMPs are a set of guidelines and procedures that are designed to minimize the release of pollutants into bodies of water. Examples of BMPs include using low-phosphorus fertilizers in agriculture, and implementing spill response plans and secondary containment measures in industrial operations.

Construction of stormwater management systems is also an effective way to prevent water pollution. This involves the use of techniques such as retention ponds, rain gardens, and green roofs to capture and treat stormwater runoff before it reaches bodies of water. By slowing down the flow of water, these systems allow pollutants to settle out and be removed before the water is released into the environment.

Air pollution control is the process of reducing or eliminating the release of pollutants into the air. One of the most common methods of air pollution control is the use of air pollution control equipment to remove pollutants from emissions. This may include technologies such as scrubbers, filters, and catalytic converters.

Regulation of emissions from industrial and transportation sources is another method of air pollution control. This can include setting limits on the amount of pollutants that can be released, and requiring permits for industrial operations and vehicles.

Promotion of cleaner energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, can also help to reduce air pollution. Clean energy sources do not produce emissions and thus, do not contribute to air pollution.
