Environmental engineering is the branch of Civil Engineering that deals with the protection and improvement of the environment. It is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles of engineering, biology, and chemistry to address environmental problems. Environmental engineers work to design and manage systems and facilities for the control and treatment of water, air, and solid waste, as well as the assessment of the environmental impacts of projects.

One of the main responsibilities of environmental engineers is the design and management of water and waste treatment systems. This includes the treatment of drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater. Environmental engineers use various treatment processes such as filtration, sedimentation, and disinfection to remove pollutants and make the water safe for human consumption and for the environment. They also design systems to treat and manage industrial and hazardous wastes.

Another important aspect of environmental engineering is air pollution control. Environmental engineers work to design and operate systems that control the emissions of pollutants from industrial and transportation sources. They also work to improve indoor air quality by designing and operating ventilation systems.

Environmental engineers also play a key role in the assessment of the environmental impacts of projects. This includes conducting environmental impact assessments, risk assessments, and feasibility studies. Environmental engineers use this information to identify potential environmental impacts and to develop mitigation strategies to minimize or eliminate these impacts.

In addition to the traditional roles, environmental engineers are also working on sustainable solutions such as green infrastructure, low-impact development, and sustainable transportation systems. This includes the use of natural systems, such as wetlands and rain gardens, to treat and manage stormwater.
