Chemical engineering is a field that plays a significant role in the production of various products that are essential in our daily lives. However, the traditional methods of production are not always environmentally friendly and sustainable. Therefore, one of the major trends in chemical engineering is the shift towards sustainable processes and clean energy.

Sustainable processes refer to the production of goods and services in a manner that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. In chemical engineering, this includes the development of new technologies for the production of biofuels, the use of renewable energy sources, and the application of green chemistry principles to minimize waste and pollution.

Biofuels are a type of renewable energy that is produced from organic materials such as plant-based materials. They are considered to be more sustainable compared to fossil fuels as they release fewer greenhouse gases, and can be produced from waste materials. Bioprocesses like fermentation, enzyme technology and genetic engineering are used to produce biofuels.

Renewable energy sources are energy sources that are replenished naturally and are considered to be sustainable in the long term. Examples of renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy. Chemical engineers are playing a critical role in the development and implementation of renewable energy sources.

Green chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. It is an essential part of sustainable processes in chemical engineering. Green chemistry principles are used to minimize waste and pollution, and to improve the overall sustainability of chemical processes.
