In this module, there will be an explanation of the main nine word classes that we use in the English language. Those being, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Even though the main four are nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, the others do exist and it is important to know them. This is because it helps you better understand the meaning of a sentence, and the more specific you can be in identifying a word’s class during analysis, the more the examiner can mark you for relevant questions (more on this later).

Note

It is important to note that depending on the sentence, a word’s class may change. This may be for numerous reasons depending on the sentence (again, more on this later).

A word’s class depends on how the word functions in the sentence, as in; does it describe; does it interject; does it count; is it a physical thing; so on and so forth. This module will teach you how to identify a word’s class and why a word is characterised by such class.
